A bit more information

April 17, 2010

Ok, I now have a bit more information, and hopefully it won’t get to the point that I have too much information and get dangerous.

I’ll give some more basic background about qualifications for dual Italian citizenship in a later blog but basically I have done some more research on what I need to do next.

Most importantly, I now have read the last document that the Italian Consulate had sent me (kind of like not reading the instructions when you get a 1,500-piece thing to build.)  This note says that appointments for all the rest of this year are taken so the next available meeting I can have is January 2011!  Well, now I can see I’ll be writing a lot of filler blogs until my appointment (which as of right now I still don’t have).  It’s a good thing you don’t have to see me sing and dance the time away!  Just ask my wife!  At least the cat likes my singing…

She has trouble using the mouse so primarily uses her kitty-touch-pad

So the way I figure it, I should immediately make the appointment to meet with the Consulate and give them my citizenship application (which I haven’t started filling in yet), and my 7 or 8 pieces of certified proof that I qualify (of which I now have one actually in hand.)  So the day after tomorrow (Monday) I’ll set up an appointment for 9 months from now.  (9 months.  Hmm.  I guess it’s not just a coincidence.  It might be just like giving birth.  Without the mess.) (Of course I haven’t completed the process yet, so for all I know, there may be a mess.  Hopefully not.)

Anyway, there are other related issues which I will also have to deal with.  Again, I’ll describe the background in a later blog, but my wife will also qualify to become an Italian dual-citizen, but not until late December.   But more importantly not until I really do get my citizenship.  And on top of that, we can’t even apply for her citizenship until I am confirmed a citizen.  So if we wait until I get my citizenship to contact the Consulate for an appointment for her, it will be 2012 before we get her papers processed.  So, on Monday I’ll see if they can make an appointment for me in January, and for her sometime next April (a year from now).

If I am planning it right, and I can get an appointment in January, and she can meet with them in April, this may all work out.  Then I will have until January to get all my application paperwork in order.  I have heard that once the application gets sent to Italy, it generally takes less than a month to get the final citizenship.  If my citizenship is in place by the beginning of March, 2011, we will have a month to spare, before my wife would apply.  At that point I think all she’ll need will be her birth certificate, our marriage certificate, and some sort of proof of my new Italian citizenship.

At this point I’m kind of flying by the seat of my pants so time will tell how this all falls into place.
